Stormy Weather

Here are a few more photographs from the other night.

Interesting and scary side note…we have a small garden in our backyard.  To keep the critters from eating everything up, I put up a short, chicken wire fence around the garden.  Yesterday, the day after the storm went through, we found a dead possum that we thought had gotten itself caught in the fence.  When I got home from work I set about disposing of the dead animal.  Stacy and the kids came outside to observe my activities and, in the process of doing so, Adelle grabbed the fence.  We didn’t realize it until after approximately 5-10 seconds, but she was being electrocuted by the fence!  First, yes, she’s okay – frightened, sore, and worn out from the whole ordeal – naturally.  We immediately contacted our insurance company’s emergency nurse line to ask what we should do – they advised us to observe her and, if anything didn’t seem right, take her into the emergency room.  We also immediately contacted our electric company.  They sent a couple of technicians to our home.  They hooked up a multimeter to the fence and found that it had 120 volts running through it.  To put that into perspective – that’s about the same voltage that runs through your outlets and light fixtures in your home!  The technicians were baffled and started looking around to see if they could identify the source of the electricity.  They ended up finding that we had 5 circuits on our circuit breaker panel labeled for things that seemed like they belonged outdoors (shepherds pole, playground, big trees, little trees, etc.).  When they switched these circuits off the power on the fence went away.  So, apparently, a previous occupant of our home had run electrical cables all over the backyard and one of them (at least) was exposed.  Normally, it’s dry when we’re playing and/or working in the backyard  and garden, so we hadn’t experienced the shocking surprise previously.  When we were tending to the dead possum yesterday the ground was still wet from the rain that fell during the storm and, as you know (or should know), water is a good conductor of electricity, thus, our little 2-year-old daughter (and mom & dad) had quite the scare.  Oh, and that possum wasn’t caught in our fence, he had been electrocuted.  Yeah, nice.

Thanks for following our blog.  Stay safe!  😉
